Why I Love Working With Moms
In my work with Human Design, there are two groups of people I feel most drawn to: Generators and moms of any energy type (Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Reflector, or Manifestor). Supporting moms has always been a part of my life, starting with my own mother! After college, I spent 10 years as a professional nanny, working in Chicago, Los Angeles, and even London, helping to raise over 20 children.
Working with kids always felt natural, but as I got older, my attention shifted to observing mothers. As a professional nanny, I spent countless hours with mothers, in their homes, supporting them as they raised their babies and young children. I became intimately aware of the deep challenges women face in raising kids, particularly in the early years.
When I had my first child at 36, I felt very prepared. I was confident in the “doing” part—feeding, diapering, soothing. But what shook me to my core was my own identity. I felt the pressure to be “good,” to stay on top of everything, to show that I hadn’t really changed and that I was doing just fine. And then, in March of 2020, the world shut down. My first son turned four months old the day the COVID lockdowns started, and suddenly my entire support system disappeared. My husband and I owned a small business in the service industry, and I was now isolated with just him and our infant son. Life continued this way for the next two to two-and-a-half years, through another pregnancy and the birth of my second son in the fall of 2021.
By the time my second child arrived, I wasn’t just floundering—I was completely lost. I no longer recognized the person I had become, and I didn’t have the energy to even try. Thank the universe that I had enough awareness to recognize this had been going on for a long time (nearly three years), and I didn’t see a possibility of it getting better. I decided it was time to seek help and went on medication.
(A quick note: I’m pro-medicine! Sometimes we need help, and that’s okay. What’s important is finding people who will listen to you, give your questions and concerns space, and support what your body is telling you.)
The medication gave me enough energy to remember that I had interests of my own. It was around this time that I discovered a podcast where the hosts were talking about “Generators” and “Projectors.” I didn’t know what they were referring to, but it intrigued me. After some quick online research, I found out they were talking about Human Design. If you’ve read the "About" section of my website, you know that Human Design resonated with me immediately, although it came with an astoundingly steep learning curve.
Human Design started to give me life, vitality, energy, and purpose. It gave me the tools to not only see who I was but to understand how certain things—things that had been long-term insecurities—were showing up in my life. I could finally identify which of those insecurities were actually strengths, which were misdirected energy, and which issues I no longer needed to carry.
So Why Do I Love Working With Moms?
Because you are the best mom when you are simply yourself. And being yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity for your well-being and the well-being of your children and your world.
I love working with moms who feel like they’ve lost themselves in motherhood because, 1) you’re not crazy—you have lost parts of yourself, and 2) you will find a version of yourself that will make you weep with love and pride, in the same way you do for your kids.
Motherhood brings a unique potency to our personhood that nothing else can. You are different now. You’re more potent. Let’s start the process of (re)discovering who you are and begin living with just a bit more ease.
